What is a Taxonomy?

In WordPress, “filters” are called “taxonomies”. A common example of a taxonomy that you’ve probably seen many times would be things like Color, or Size when selling T-shirts.

In that example, color and size are the taxonomies, and red, blue, yellow, green, or small, medium, large, x-large are the terms. People often refer to them as “filters” since they are regularly used to filter results.

By default, RoadMapWP comes with one taxonomy, called “Tags”. Free and pro users can navigate to RoadMap > Taxonomies to add and remove terms to/from the Tags taxonomy. These taxonomies can then be used to filter ideas. Users can choose the terms when submitting ideas, and can also use them to filter existing ideas while browsing.

Pro users have the ability to create their own custom taxonomies. Simply create a taxonomy, then add the appropriate terms and they will be available on the front end for filtering.

This can help you organize the ideas coming in, especially if you have a complicated software or if you’re actually selling multiple pieces of software under the same brand on the same website. You might create a taxonomy called “Product” and add your various products as terms so users can select the appropriate one when submitting an idea.
